Travelling to Tartu

There is an airport in Tartu served by Finnair with flights to Helsinki twice a day. The closest bigger airport is in Tallinn with very frequent bus connection directly between the airport and Tartu, operated by Lux Express, travel time 2 hours 15 minutes. There is also a regular train connection between Tallinn and Tartu operated by Elron (travel time 2 hours), but the closest train station (Ülemiste) from where a train to Tartu can be boarded, is located about 1 kilometer away from the airport. In addition, there is also infrequent (a few times a day) bus connection between Riga and Tartu operated by Lux Express (travel time 4 hours).

As flight delays are always possible and the connection between Tallinn and Tartu is frequent, we do not recommend buying bus or train tickets in advance if you will be coming to Tallinn by plane. Train tickets are only valid for the specific journey and time for which they are purchased for and can be purchased directly in the train (with no significant price difference). If you plan to take the bus, we recommend buying the tickets from the website upon landing in Tallinn.
